about the artist
Marty Viljamaa was the original art director at Atari. His artwork was on the sides of the arcade consoles, and on the cartridge boxes for systems like the 2600 and 5200.

Marty also did commercial illustrations for Silicon Valley companies back in the 70s, but as an artist he- like other artists of his day- was immersed in the abstract and gestural painting era that rose to prominence in the 50s and 60s. He was from Finland, had a thick accent, and was a heavy drinker. His artwork is now collected, with an emphasis on what he created for Atari.
